HumasUPNVJ - Air medical transportation has become part of the emergency medical system. Through the use of air transport, particularly helicopters, patients can move quickly and safely to referral hospitals. Currently in Indonesia there are only a few experts who can carry out emergency evacuations via air transportation or what we usually call helicopter ambulances.

For this reason, the Jakarta Veterans National Development University in collaboration with the Fondation de l'Académie Médecine (FAM) and the Airbus Foundation held Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) training in Indonesia on 3 – 4 December 2019 at the Limo Campus UPN Veterans Jakarta, and on December 5, practice was carried out with the Airbus H135 helicopter belonging to the Indonesian Aviation College (STPI) at the Pelita Air Service base, Pondok Cabe.

In her remarks, the Chancellor of UPN Veterans Jakarta Erna Hernawati said "this training is important not only for Indonesia but also for UPNVJ because it is in accordance with the vision and mission of the faculty and university where the HEMS training covers medical treatment including in incidents such as natural disasters and traffic accidents" she said .

In line with Budi Sylvana, the Head of the Health Crisis Center at the Ministry of Health, thanked UPN Veteran Jakarta and FAM for being the first initiators of this activity in Indonesia. "Thank you to UPNVJ for initiating the first helicopter emergency training in Indonesia and thanks to UPNVJ for providing this training with the Airbus Foundation," he said.

Budi explained that this activity was very important to improve the quality of medical personnel, especially doctors from the aviation industry because in fact 30% of emergency patients died in the hospital, while 70% of emergency patients died on the way to the hospital, so this was aimed at improving the performance of the medical team at UPNVJ and Indonesia.

FAM Director Eleonore Assante also added that FAM was formed in 2013 and focuses on humanitarian activities in countries such as China, Russia, India, Brazil, Mexico and also Indonesia by conducting training for doctors. FAM has been collaborating with the Airbus Foundation for 5 years.

This training, which is intended for medical teams, especially emergencies, is one of the annual Airbus Foundation programs conducted in selected countries. Airbus Foundation and FAM have been carrying out this activity for approximately 5 years in developing and developing countries. Indonesia is the choice because of the high rate of road accidents, especially toll roads and Indonesia's geographical and geological conditions which result in disaster-prone conditions, but there is not enough trained emergency medical personnel, especially for evacuation by helicopter.

With full support from the Indonesian Ministry of Health through the Health Crisis Center, this event was held successfully and received an extraordinary response from medical and non-medical stakeholders. Evidenced by the booming number of participants, which doubled from the organizer's estimate of 50 participants to 102 participants. including doctors from the UPN Veterans Jakarta environment, non-medical stakeholders such as helicopter operators, the ministry of transportation, the Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps and so on were also present at this event.

It is hoped that after this training, an introduction and further training will be held to be able to strengthen systems, infrastructure and medical personnel who can support the implementation of HEMS / Ambulance Helicopters in Indonesia.
