Deputy Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the Jakarta Veterans National Development University (UPNVJ) Dr. Anter Venus, MA.Comm said that students must study with an open mind while studying at university.
"Open your mind to understand various perspectives exploratively. Be critical," said Venus in the 2021 UPNVJ Introduction to New Student Campus Life (PKKMB) activity which was held online on Wednesday (11/8/2021).
Venus said that the difference between tertiary institutions and high schools is that students and lecturers are encouraged to conduct research and contribute to science. Higher education functions to produce knowledge.
To be able to produce and contribute to knowledge, the community in higher education, both lecturers and students, must be critical.
"Knowledge is produced from someone who is critical and driven by an attitude of always asking questions," he said.
Another difference between education in college and high school is the flexibility of learning. In tertiary institutions, students are required to have independence and the ability to plan their studies.
In the era of digital disruption, Venus said that learning arrangements have changed, mainly due to technological advances in the field of information and communication.
"Teachers and lecturers are no longer the only source of learning because students can learn from anywhere with unlimited variations. The digital era opens learning opportunities openly," he said.
According to Venus, the government welcomed this change by implementing the Merdeka Campus curriculum which allows students to study in other study programs, even other campuses both at home and abroad.
"UPNVJ has since last year opened wide opportunities for students to undergo the Merdeka Campus curriculum," he explained. (*)
