Moderate, Actual and Contextual Commitment to Religious Learning in UPNVJ

HumasUPNVJ - On Tuesday, July 19, 2022, UPN Veterans Jakarta again conducted a Debriefing and Strengthening Commitment to Moderate and Contextual Islamic Learning for Islamic religion lecturers at UPN Veterans Jakarta. The activity, which was packaged in the form of Technical Guidance and managed by the UPNVJ Learning Development and Quality Assurance Institute (LP3M), featured three resource persons, namely the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of UPN Veterans Jakarta, Dr. Anter Venus, M.A. Comm., as the keynote speaker, and two professors of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, namely Prof. Dr. H. Abuddin Nata, MA, Professor of History and Philosophy of Islamic Education, and Prof. and Dr. H. Armai Arief, M.Ag. who is a professor of Islamic Religious Education.

In his presentation and briefing, Dr. Anter Venus said that Islamic religious learning at the UPN Veterans Jakarta campus is taught in a unique way by referring to the identity of UPN Veterans Jakarta as a state defense campus. Furthermore, Venus explained that Islamic religious education at UPNVJ is based on four steps which are also used as orientations or directions in Islamic religious learning at UPNVJ, namely; (1) moderation-oriented Islamic learning, (2) contextual implementation of Islamic values to become good citizens within the framework of Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution, (3) strengthening the relationship between religion and science-technology, and (4) actualization of the Islamic religion by being relevant to current issues ranging from the turmoil of the digital world, including hoax phenomena, demographic bonuses, to SDGs issues, especially sustainability.

Regarding religious moderation, the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs explained that, since its inception, UPNVJ has been embedded with the identity of defending the state, this identity was later strengthened when it was nationalized in 2014 by including this identity in the University statutes. With the identity of defending the country, Venus continued, there is no doubt that Islamic religious studies at UPNVJ must instill the values of religious moderation, commitment to tolerance and equality of citizens and love for the homeland.

UPNVJ strongly believes that the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia and Pancasila are final. It is the genius endeavor of our nation's founding fathers. Which until now has been proven to be able to unite this nation. Since its establishment, the so-called Indonesian people are also all people who live and recognize Indonesia as their homeland, with all the diversity of ethnic backgrounds, languages, cultures and religions. Since its establishment, all religions have been recognized and respected for their existence, including belief.

The status of higher education as a scientific community that prioritizes science and technology in thinking and acting, of course, must be aligned with the religious learning curriculum. According to Venus, religious learning at UPNVJ is directed to bring the spirit of mastery of science and technology, as well as being open to scientific studies and data. Religious learning will also be very interesting when combined with scientific studies and findings, or linked to current issues supported by data-based scientific analysis. This way of learning religion will attract not only the millennial generation but as a whole will build a fresh way of religious understanding for the academic community at UPN Jeteran Jakarta.

At the end of the presentation, Venus said that the world of this era of disruption needed a fresh, intelligent, and relevant perspective and model of religious learning that was relevant to the realities of everyday life. That way, the results of religious learning will create a strong impression and understanding, which will eventually become a reinforcing factor as well as a reference in understanding the life of the world that is undergoing tremendous changes today.
