HumasUPNVJ - As part of the commitment to address the climate change crisis in Indonesia, the Chancellor of the National Development University “Veteran” Jakarta (UPNVJ), Prof. Dr. Anter Venus, attended the Workshop on Indonesia's FOLU Net Sink 2030 held at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), Jakarta, Friday, May 16, 2025.

This workshop discussed effective environmental communication strategies to support the achievement of the 2030 FOLU Net Sink target. On the same occasion, a journalism forum was also officially launched as part of efforts to strengthen the role of the media in voicing climate change issues.

FOLU Net Sink 2030 is Indonesia's strategic target in the forestry and land use sector (Forestry and Other Land Uses) which aims to create conditions where the amount of carbon absorbed by forests and land is greater than the amount of carbon released. This means that the FOLU sector is expected to become a net carbon sink, no longer a source of emissions.

FOLU itself covers various land uses, such as forests, agricultural land, and other areas. While the term net sink refers to the condition when an area absorbs more carbon than it releases into the atmosphere.

Secretary General of KLHK, Dr. Ir. Mahfudz, MP, in his speech conveyed the importance of the media's role in disseminating information about FOLU Net Sink 2030 to the wider community. He emphasized that collaboration between all parties, including the media, is essential to build awareness of the importance of real action against climate change.

“Joint initiatives, including through articles and coverage on climate change and solutions such as tree planting, are very important to mobilize the community,” said Mahfudz.

He added that Indonesia has prepared various initial steps to maintain environmental sustainability and respond to climate challenges, one of which is through the FOLU Net Sink target which is part of the commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The 2030 FOLU Net Sink Target is an integral part of Indonesia's contribution to the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which is a national commitment to reduce GHG emissions in accordance with global agreements. Strategies to achieve this include reducing the rate of deforestation and forest degradation, strengthening sustainable forest management, and rehabilitating peatlands.

The success of achieving the 2030 Net Sink FOLU will be an important foundation in accelerating steps towards Net Zero Emission by 2060, while also emphasizing Indonesia's role in mitigating global climate change.
