International Class Preparation, UPNVJ Holds English Language Training

HumasUPNVJ - Jakarta Veterans National Development University (UPNVJ) held training "English As A Medium of Instruction in Higher Education" for lecturers as preparation for holding international classes at the State Defense Campus.

"UPNVJ has a vision to become an international-class university. Therefore, we need to familiarize ourselves with English. Before opening international classes, we can start by opening English classes," said UPNVJ Deputy Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Anter Venus, MA.Comm when opening the training at the Diplomacy Laboratory, FISIP, UPNVJ Pondok Labu Campus, Thursday (3/2/2022).

Venus said most Indonesians only studied English for a few years at school but rarely practiced it, so they often found it difficult to use English effectively.

Therefore, the training activities were held to provide debriefing to a number of selected lecturers from all faculties. According to Venus, the lecturers are prepared to teach English classes.

The training was held by UPT Language UPNVJ. Head of UPT Language Ayunita Ajengtiyas S Mashuri, SE, M. Accy, M.Com said the training was held to prepare for improving UPNVJ's academic services by holding English classes before holding international classes.

"International presence will provide many advantages for campuses and students," he said.

The training was held for two days, namely Thursday (3/2/2020) and Friday (4/2/2022) by presenting a number of speakers. The resource person in the first session was STKIP Lecturer Setia Budhi Rangkas Bitung Dr. Li. Nunung Nurhayati, MPd with the material "English as a Medium Instruction (EMI) in Higher Education".

Nunung said that EMI was not English itself, but delivered material in English.

"The challenge lies in the ability of lecturers and students to speak English," he explained.

Apart from Nunung, other speakers who will attend are three lecturers from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, namely Didin Nuruddin Hidayat, MA, Ph.D, Kania Mayastika, M.Pd, and Ummi Kultsum, M.Pd, Ph.D; and lecturer at the University of Muhammadiyah Tangerang Dr. Arjulayana, SS, M.Pd. (*)
