Chancellor: UPNVJ Ready to Collaborate with Timor Leste

HumasUPNVJ – Chancellor of the Jakarta Veterans National Development University (UPNVJ) Prof. Dr. Erna Hernawati, Ak, CPMA, CA said she was ready to work with the Timor Leste Government in developing teaching, research and community service between lecturers and students from the two countries.

“Timor Leste is a brother for Indonesia. We hope that there can be cooperation in the Tri Dharma of Higher Education between Indonesia and Timor Leste," said the Chancellor at the Launching of the New Study Program of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences which invited the President of the Council of Ministers of Timor Leste Fidelis Leite Magalhaes and the Junior Minister for Social Communication of Timor Leste Mericio Juvinal dos Reis at the Bhinneka Tunggal Ika Auditorium, UPNVJ Pondok Labu Campus, South Jakarta, Tuesday (23/8/2022).

The Chancellor said the visit of two ministers from Timor Leste was an opportunity for UPNVJ to develop cooperation with universities in that country. He hopes that cooperation can be established at the inter-ministerial level between Indonesia and Timor Leste.

According to the Chancellor, the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia Nadiem Anwar Makarim is a young leader who has a vision for the future that will be in accordance with the development vision of Timor Leste.

"Therefore, I asked the Dean of FISIP to prepare a more concrete collaboration with Timor Leste. Hopefully this is not the first and last visit. We are very open to visiting each other, including to see developments in Timor Leste as a reference," he said.

Meanwhile, President of the Council of Ministers of Timor Leste Fidelis Leite Magalhaes said that Timor Leste as a newly independent country faced the challenge of fulfilling independence as well as following global political developments. Therefore, the science of international relations needs to be studied.

“Timor Leste became an independent country in 2002. There are many hopes from the people of Timor Leste to realize democracy as an independent nation and state. The struggle for independence has already been carried out. After independence, what is the priority to fill independence, "he said.

Fidelis said that many of the current generation of Timor Leste's youth have the same experience as the Sukarno-Hatta generation and the youth who fought for and proclaimed Indonesian independence on August 17, 1945. The similarity of that experience is feeling the atmosphere before and after independence.

"Sukarno-Hatta, after proclaiming Indonesia's independence, thought about what should be done to build the state and nation. Now, our generation in Timor Leste is also thinking about what must be done to build the country and nation," he explained.

Fidelis said one thing that must be done is to manage Timor Leste's wealth. According to him, one of Timor Leste's natural wealth is oil and gas. This oil and gas wealth must be managed not only to meet the needs of the current generation, but also to think about the needs of future generations.

Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UPNVJ Dr. Dudy Heryadi said the event which invited two ministers from Timor Leste was the launch of a new study program under the UPNVJ FSIP, namely S-1 Information Science, Master of Communication Science, Master of International Relations, and Master of Political Science.

"We hope that through the establishment of the four new study programs, FISIP UPNVJ can make a major contribution to development, especially human resource development," said Dudy.

Previously, FISIP UPNVJ had three undergraduate study programs, namely S-1 Communication Studies, S-1 International Relations, and S-1 Political Science. Three new study programs at the master's level are continuation programs from the three existing undergraduate study programs.
