LPPM Held “Internationalization of Research and Publication” 2022

HumasUPNVJ - As a middle-income developing country, the pressure for Indonesia to build its competitiveness in terms of higher education institutions is increasing. To achieve this predicate, universities must excel in at least three aspects: academic reputation, international reputation, and research quality. In terms of research, Indonesia's research performance and research funding lags behind most of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) neighbors and middle-income countries. Research results are usually measured in the form of scientific publications and (international) patents. In this regard, Indonesia's performance is rather poor. According to the SCImago Journal and Country Rank1, during the 1996-2008 period Indonesia published only 9,194 scientific documents, placing its scientific productivity behind Bangladesh, Kenya, Lithuania and Nigeria – and far below neighboring Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Indonesia's investment in research is one of the lowest in the region, with gross expenditures of 0.25 percent of GDP in 2017. Despite an increase from 0.09 percent in 2013, it is still well below Singapore's (2.2 percent of GDP). ), Malaysia (1.4 percent of GDP), Thailand (0.6 percent of GDP) and even Vietnam (0.4 percent of GDP).

The Institute for Research and Community Service as the unit mandated for university research development is one that can play a role in this effort at the university level. LPPM UPNVJ in this case initiates initiatives and commitments to improve the University's research performance at the international level, including by holding seminars related to the internationalization of university research.

The LPPM internationalization seminar, “Internationalization of Research and Publication” was held today, by presenting Prof. Emeritus Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak (Rector of City University Malaysia, former Malaysian Higher Education Director-General) and Prof. Tjitjik Srie Tjahjandarie, Dra. PhD (Acting Secretary, Directorate of Higher Education, Indonesian Ministry of Higher Education and Culture). This activity was attended by approximately 50 participants who attended through a hybrid, located at the Bhinneka Tunggal Ika Auditorium Building and a zoom meeting consisting of lecturers, education staff, students and the general public. Prof. Erna as the Chancellor of UPNVJ explained that this activity will bring many useful outputs for the campus, “Today we have a very valuable opportunity with the arrival of two very valuable resource persons. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a very valuable and useful event for the campus. “Internationalization of Research and Publication”, of course, UPNVJ continues to have acceleration programs regarding research and publications. Thank you Prof. Tjitjik for always taking the time to attend and give his support for the acceleration program, especially at UPNVJ. Prof. Tjitjik will convey the best research strategy for UPNVJ, thanks also to Prof. Mustafa, who will convey information and knowledge related to research and publications at Universiti Malaysia, so that they can be studied at UPNVJ," said the Chancellor.

“UPNVJ still needs encouragement from various parties for this acceleration, not only for fulfilling the KPI or accreditation but actually overall, up to research and publications. In terms of quantity, the number of publications by UPNVJ lecturers, thank God, has increased, this is a matter of pride for us. But when we find the accreditation indicators, we still have shortcomings on the other side. Therefore, we hope that this seminar can add a lot of knowledge for UPNVJ to apply in the future,” he concluded.

Prof. Tjitjik said that research policy cannot be separated from Indonesia's 2045 vision, "Hopefully, with this activity, hopefully it can increase our understanding, especially in the field of research compared to neighboring countries. Indonesia's research focus should be focused on the Digital Economy, Green Economy, Blue Economy, Technology and Medical Services, Tourism and Creative Economy, and Appropriate Technology and STEM," explained Prof. Tjitjik.

The activity was continued with a presentation from Prof. Emeritus Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak and closed with a discussion session.
