HumasUPNVJ – Professor of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the National Development University "Veteran" Jakarta Prof. Dr. Acim Heri Iswanto said that the values of State Defense must be developed in the era of Society 5.0 so that Indonesian patriotism produces State Defense that does not have a negative impact.
“Empirical and practical studies basically examine the effects of patriotism at various fields and levels. Studies show that there are many positive impacts, but there are also a number of negative impacts," said Acim in a scientific oration delivered at the University Open Session in the framework of the UPNVJ 45th Anniversary which was held at the Bhinneka Tunggal Ika Auditorium, UPNVJ Pondok Labu Campus, Jakarta, Wednesday (30/11/2022).
Acim said a number of studies have found that patriotism has a positive impact, namely encouraging people to pay taxes more obediently, participate in politics, and be solidarity.
Constructive patriotism makes people more cooperative and sympathetic towards other countries and supports the co-existence in peace and mutual love between nations. Patriotism also has a positive impact when directed to grow the nation's economy together.
“Negatively, patriotism is criticized for leading to a less egalitarian attitude and tending to be less supportive of income equality. Patriotism also makes people sometimes less active in participating in unconventional forms of political activity or tolerating minorities," he said.
In addition, blind patriotism can also produce a rejection of universalism, it can even lead to collective self-destruction in war.
"Actually, the findings above are still inconsistent and inconclusive, indicating that patriotism is closely related to context. This is where the urgency lies for all of us to implement State Defense for the XXI century and beyond, especially in the era of society 5.0," he explained.
Acim said society 5.0 is characterized by a situation where cyber and physical platforms integrate and humans play an important role. Human civilization has gone through four social stages that are closely related to the industrial revolution which has reached the fourth revolution, namely the era of hunting society, the era of farming society, the era of industrial society, and the era of information society.
“Furthermore, Society 5.0 is a super-smart society, which has the potential to bring us great achievements such as creating prosperity, ending poverty, and also protecting the planet earth. However, he also carries a number of threats that are directly or indirectly related to the survival of a nation and state," he said.
