World Logic Day Celebration: Logic In Everyday Life Is Important

HumasUPNVJ – Center for Compulsory Subjects (MKWU) which is directly supervised by the Institute for Learning Development and Quality Assurance (LP3M) held a philosophy & logic webinar through a Zoom meeting on Monday (30/01). This activity is UPNVJ's participation in commemorating World Logic Day which aims to bring out the intellectual history, practical implications, and conceptual significance of logic.

Five years ago, on January 14 2019, the Logica Universalis Association celebrated World Logic Day for the first time. Then on November 26, 2019 Unesco established and proclaimed January 14 as the day of remembrance.

Quoting from the UNESCO site, the ability to think is one of the most defining features of humanity. The definition of humanity deals with concepts such as consciousness, knowledge and reason. Logic, as an investigation into the principles of reasoning, has played an important role in the development of philosophy and science. Along with the development of science and technology, there is public awareness about the importance of logic.

UPNVJ Chancellor, Dr. Anter Venus, MA, Comm who attended the zoom from the Rector's Room as the keynote speaker stated that UPNVJ really cares about upholding scientific culture so that it is committed to commemorating this World Logic Day. Not only this year but it is hoped that it will continue to be held every year.

"So just for your information ladies and gentlemen, UPN is very concerned with implementing traditional values or the university's fourteen basic values, ladies and gentlemen. One of them is critical thinking whose basis is logic. And it's very important for us to celebrate everything that has to do with this logic." Venus said.

Venus also reveals that this warning is important to do based on four important points. First, the flood of messages. In 2015, it was recorded that 2.5 quintillion (10 18 ) bytes of information were created every day. The message created is not entirely objective and true. There are messages that fall into the category of hoaxes and fake news . Therefore, logic is needed to analyze these messages.

The second reason Venus explains is because there are conflicting messages. This is very natural because the messages created have different interests, motives, and also sources of information. Logic is needed so that we can determine whether we will go with the flow or be able to think independently and objectively.

Furthermore, Venus mentions this warning as a form of implementing 14 traditional university values, one of which is critical thinking. The basis of other critical thinking and not is logic, including the understanding of fallacies of thought.

The last reason is to make UPNVJ students able to think logically and become centers of influence or agents of logical-critical thinking in the midst of society.

Through this webinar, it is hoped that all participants will be able to explore how to live a life by thinking logically, thinking straight, orderly, coherently, and rationally. There are two topics discussed namely; 1) think logically in the academic world presented by Dr. Bagus Takwin, M.Hum., and 2) understanding of logic and aesthetics in the innovation presented by Prof. Tommy Awuy.
